Brief information about Mindanao, Philippines
The island of Mindanao is the second largest and easternmost island in the Philippines.
Mindanao is also known and called as The Land of Promise. The island is named
after the Maguindanaons (the natives) who constituted the largest Sultanate historically.
Evidence from maps made during the 17th and 18th centuries suggests
that the name was used to refer to the island by natives at the time.
In prehistoric times the Negrito (black) people arrived. Sometime around 1500 BC
Austronesian peoples spread throughout the Philippines and far beyond.
Islam religion first spread to the region during the 13th century through Arab traders.
